Why does my child need a Child Safety Seat? Although many of us have fond memories of rattling around in the back of the family station wagon, what we didn't know then is that riding that way was the number one cause of death for children.  Fortunately, we can reminisce about those days and we can learn a best practice when making decisions on how to safely and securely transport our children when riding in motor vehicles.

While the number of motor vehicle injuries and deaths has been declining as more people use seat belts and car seats, the number of crashes continues to go up every year b there are more cars on the road — and Motor vehicle crashes are the single largest kill for children between the ages of 1-14 years.

Luckily, we have seat belts and child safety seats to help keep us safe. The problem is, seat belts are designed to fit adult bodies so they don't secure our children correctly.

Car safety seats have been shown to be highly effective in reducing death and injury in motor vehicle crashes.  According to NHTSA, car safety seats are 71% effective in reducing deaths for infants and 54% effective in reducing deaths for children ages 1 to 4 years. Belt-positioning booster seats reduce the risk of injury by 59% for children ages 4 through 8 years. Clearly, restraining infants and children in the proper car safety seat does help keep them safe. These considerations are serious enough that the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration now recommends that all children who've outgrown their car seat continue to ride in a booster seat until they're at least 8 years old and 4 feet 9 inches tall.

Through observational surveys, findings for Butte County from November 2006 - September 2007 showed that 13% of Booster-size children were completely unrestrained when riding in a vehicle and current Booster seat usage rate for Butte County is 50%.  Although our numbers are increasing we must work hard in making sure our children ride safely and securely when riding in vehicles.

Lets help make our community a safer community by safely restraining all passengers in our vehicles correctly on every trip, every time. Butte County Public HealthÕs Kids in Safe Seats Program and Boost and BeltÕem campaign work to ensure that all children in Butte County are properly restrained in the correct restraint system every time they travel in a motor vehicle.
